  • 4 slices of sourdough bread (2 oz each, or 56 g)
  • 4 oz (about 113 g) sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 4 oz (about 113 g) Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) unsalted butter, at room temperature

  3. Spread garlic butter generously on one side of each slice of bread.
  4. Place two slices, buttered-side down, in the skillet.
  5. Evenly layer cheddar and Gruyère on top of each slice.
  6. Top with remaining slices of bread, buttered-side up.
  7. Cook for 3-5 minutes until golden brown; check with a spatula.
  8. Carefully flip over and cook for an additional 3-5 minutes until cheese is melted and bread is crispy.
  9. Remove from heat and let cool for a minute, then slice and serve.
