Ingredients:

  • 5 oz (142g) canned tuna in water, drained well
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) finely chopped celery
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) finely chopped red onion
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) fresh dill, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon (2.5ml) lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • 2 slices sourdough bread
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) butter, softened
  • 2-3 slices sharp cheddar cheese (about 2 oz / 57g)

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, celery, red onion, dill, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly with a fork until well combined. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  2. Generously butter one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in a skillet or griddle pan over medium heat.
  4. Top the bread with the cheddar cheese slices, followed by the prepared tuna salad.
  5. Place the second slice of bread on top of the tuna salad, butter-side up.
  6. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is melted and gooey. Gently press down on the sandwich with a spatula while cooking to ensure even browning and melting.
  7. Remove the sandwich from the skillet and cut it in half. Serve immediately. Enjoy your tuna melt sandwich recipe!
