Ingredients:

  • 1 pound beef round steak or cube steak, pounded to 1/2 inch thickness
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for gravy)
  • 2 cups beef broth or stock

Instructions:

  1. Pound the steak to an even thickness. Season with salt and pepper.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix 1 cup of flour with baking powder, garlic powder, paprika, and cayenne. In another bowl, whisk together eggs and buttermilk.
  3. Dip each steak first in the flour mixture, then in the egg mixture, and finally back into the flour.
  4. Heat oil in the skillet over medium-high heat. Fry steaks until golden brown on both sides (3-4 minutes per side).
  5. Remove the cooked steaks and drain them on paper towels. In the same skillet, melt butter and whisk in the reserved flour. Slowly add beef broth, stirring constantly until thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
  6. Plate the steaks and generously ladle gravy over the top.
