Ingredients:
- 1 pound (450g) fresh green beans, trimmed
- 1/2 cup (120ml) water
- 1/4 teaspoon (1.5ml) salt, or to taste
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) unsalted butter, or olive oil (optional, for serving)
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste (optional, for serving)
Instructions:
- Rinse the green beans thoroughly under cold water. Trim the ends.
- Pour the water into the saucepan. Place the steamer basket (or colander) inside, making sure the water level is below the bottom of the basket.
- Add the green beans to the steamer basket. Sprinkle with salt. Cover the saucepan with the lid.
- Bring the water to a simmer over medium-high heat. Steam the beans for 5-8 minutes, or until they are crisp-tender and bright green. Check for doneness by piercing a bean with a fork; it should be easily pierced, but still have a bit of snap.
- Carefully remove the steamer basket from the saucepan. Toss the steamed green beans with butter (or olive oil) and black pepper (if desired). Serve immediately.
