Ingredients:

  • 1 pound (450g) fresh green beans, trimmed
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) water
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.5ml) salt, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) unsalted butter, or olive oil (optional, for serving)
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste (optional, for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the green beans thoroughly under cold water. Trim the ends.
  2. Pour the water into the saucepan. Place the steamer basket (or colander) inside, making sure the water level is below the bottom of the basket.
  3. Add the green beans to the steamer basket. Sprinkle with salt. Cover the saucepan with the lid.
  4. Bring the water to a simmer over medium-high heat. Steam the beans for 5-8 minutes, or until they are crisp-tender and bright green. Check for doneness by piercing a bean with a fork; it should be easily pierced, but still have a bit of snap.
  5. Carefully remove the steamer basket from the saucepan. Toss the steamed green beans with butter (or olive oil) and black pepper (if desired). Serve immediately.
