Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5g) salt
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) milk, whole or 2%
  • 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon (5ml) vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 4 cups (950ml) vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg, milk, melted butter, vanilla extract, and lemon zest.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/2 inch (1cm) thickness. Cut into desired shapes.
  6. Carefully drop the dough pieces into the hot oil, a few at a time. Fry for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and puffed up.
  7. Remove the fried dough from the oil with a slotted spoon or spider and place on paper towels to drain.
  8. Dust with powdered sugar or your favorite toppings. Serve immediately and enjoy this fried dough recipe!
