Ingredients:

  • 14 oz (2 standard cans) thoroughly drained tuna (in water or oil)
  • ¾ cup Quality Mayonnaise (Full Fat)
  • ½ teaspoon Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon Sea Salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon White Pepper (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon Onion Powder

Instructions:

  1. Open cans of tuna and press down firmly on the lids or use a fine-mesh sieve to expel as much liquid (water or oil) as possible. Excess liquid is the primary cause of watery tuna salad.
  2. Place the thoroughly drained tuna into a medium mixing bowl. Use a fork to gently break the tuna into small, distinct flakes. Avoid mashing it into a paste; some texture should remain.
  3. Add the mayonnaise to the flaked tuna.
  4. Sprinkle in the salt, black pepper, white pepper (if using), and onion powder.
  5. Use the fork or spatula to fold the ingredients together. Mix only until the tuna is evenly coated and the mixture achieves a smooth, creamy, off-white appearance. Avoid over-mixing.
  6. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the tuna salad for at least 30 minutes. This chilling allows the flavors to meld and the mixture to firm up, achieving the best consistency for the Jimmy Johns Tuna Salad.
  7. Taste the chilled salad and add a small pinch of salt or pepper if needed before serving on subs with lettuce and tomato.
